Carrying forward the legacy of care and compassion.
After the unfortunate untimely demise of Dr. Ashis Mukhopadhyay in 2023, a not-for-profit, service trust was formed to support indigent patients in their medical management for a range of ailments, including cancer. ASISH was formed under the leadership of Dr. Soma Mukhopadhyay (Managing Trustee), a noted molecular biologist and the better half of the late Dr. Ashis Mukhopadhyay. ‘ASISH’ also aspires to extend support in areas of rehabilitation and socio-economic empowerment of patients and survivors.
Dr. Ashis Mukhopadhyay, our great teacher, philosopher, renowned oncologist, and an alumnus of Mumbai-Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, was a natural friend of economically backward people. His life was dedicated to fighting the monster named cancer. He pursued his dream till his last breath on 26th January, 2020. ASISH vows to carry forward that glorious legacy.
Way back in 2004, on 31st August, Himadri Memorial Cancer Welfare Trust was formed to establish a cancer hospital in Kolkata, which would be technologically advanced and affordable to the economically weaker sections. A cancer research institute at 14 A, Park Lane, Kolkata was initiated, named after our unforgettable freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Dr. Mukhopadhyay’s constant effort to accommodate all kinds of diagnostics and therapy for the ever-increasing number of cancer patients resulted in the establishment of a 150-bedded super specialty cancer hospital named Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital at a sprawling campus in 3081, Nayabad Avenue, New Garia, Kolkata, in 2018.
The hospital is equipped with world-class diagnostics and therapy under his stewardship and operated by a team of doctors, scientists, health, and social workers dedicated to cancer research. While doing so, the avowed goal of catering to all classes of patients was never compromised. The new hospital, along with its modern systems, is embedded with a system of financial planning, including fund mobilization from various sources, to enable the poor and the indigent to avail of a full course of cancer treatment.
